Shipping Container Types Explained: 20ft, 40ft, and 40HQ

Choosing the right shipping container affects your cost, cargo safety, and loading efficiency. This guide covers standard container types used on China-to-USA routes and helps you decide between FCL and LCL with GSC International Freight.

40HQ is the most popular choice for general cargo from China — the extra height (2.69 m vs 2.39 m) adds roughly 10 CBM without increasing the base freight rate significantly.

When to Use Each Container Type

• 20ft — dense, heavy cargo (machinery, tiles, metals) where you hit weight limits before filling volume
• 40ft standard — balanced weight and volume; good for palletized mixed goods
• 40HQ — bulky, lightweight products: furniture, toys, home goods, apparel on hangers
• LCL (less than container load) — shipments under ~15 CBM share container space; see FCL vs LCL guide

Special Container Types

• Open top — for oversized cargo that cannot fit through standard doors
• Flat rack — for heavy machinery, vehicles, or industrial equipment
• Reefer (refrigerated) — temperature-controlled for food, pharmaceuticals, and flowers

FCL vs LCL: The Break-Even Point

LCL charges per CBM with a ~1 CBM minimum. FCL gives you an entire container at a flat rate. The break-even point for China-USA routes is typically 15–18 CBM — above that, FCL is usually cheaper per unit of volume.

Tips for Container Loading

• Distribute weight evenly to avoid tipping during crane handling
• Use moisture absorbers (desiccants) to prevent container rain on long ocean voyages
• Secure cargo with straps and dunnage to prevent shifting
